Environmental protection

According to the Estonian Constitution, environmental protection is one of the most important commitments for a person. Everyone is obliged to preserve the living and natural environment and compensate for damages he/she has caused to the environment. The Environmental Liability Act establishes the procedure for compensation. Mainly, the Ministry of the Environment and its divisions handle environmental protection.

The Environmental Inspectorate has a twenty-four-hour hotline 1313, which you can call if you notice:

  • environmental pollution or the threat thereof
  • illegal cutting, fishing, or other illegal use of nature
  • dead or injured game
  • illegal waste disposal
  • massive number of dead animals-birds-fish
  • cruel treatment of animals
  • other environmental offences
